Grand Canyon Grand Skies - North & South Rim

August 20-25, 2023

Class size: Sold Out!

Tuition: $3699

The Grand Canyon, one of the most iconic landscape locations in the United States, provides dramatic scenes year around with its dramatic cliffs, endless layers, and stunning views. If you’ve ever wanted to photograph BOTH the South and North Rims of the canyon, with the possibility of some epic thunderstorms moving over the canyon, this is your chance! I kindly invite you to come join me for 6 days while we explore all the Grand Canyon has to offer. From sunrises to sunsets, monsoon thunderstorms, and starry night skies…get your sleep in now because you’re going to need it!

What You Will Learn:

  • How to create compelling landscape compositions.

  • How to use your camera to its fullest capabilities.

  • How to utilize a variety of lenses to think “outside the box.”

  • An understanding for light and how to take advantage of it in all conditions.

  • Landscape editing techniques within Photoshop & Lightroom.

  • How to photograph stormy skies, including lightning.

  • How to photograph the night sky.

What You Will Need:

  • A DSLR camera body and assortment of lenses. A wide angle is highly recommended as well as a zoom lens.

  • A sturdy tripod.

  • An intervalometer (a cheap one off of Amazon will work just fine).

  • A headlamp or flashlight.

  • At least the trial version of Lightroom or Photoshop on your laptop.

  • Multiple batteries.

  • A 10 or 6 stop neutral density filter for your wide angle lens.

  • A lightning trigger is highly recommended, but not required.

What's Not Included:

  • Airfare.

  • Meals & beverages.

  • Transportation between the South Rim & North Rim.

What's Included:

  • Lodging for both the north and south rim. Lodging is double occupancy.

  • All park entrance fees and permits.

  • My photography knowledge, 24 hours a day during the entire workshop.

  • Post production videos that will be sent out after the workshop.

  • Transportation within the workshop for each shooting location.

    • Note: You will need a rental car to get to the Grand Canyon South Rim for the start of the workshop and to transfer to the North Rim, then back to the airport.

Where are we staying?

This workshop will be split up into two parts, the first half (August 20-23) lodging at the Grand Canyon Plaza, just 15 minutes from the south rim. We will then transfer to the north rim after breakfast (~ 4 hour drive), where we will spend two nights in that region staying at the Grand Canyon Lodge or Kanab (TBD).

Spouses

Spouses are welcome to come on this workshop for an additional fee of $900. They must also follow the workshop in their own vehicle as there is only enough room in the van for participants. If you’d like to bring your spouse, please email me after registration.

Physical Requirements:

There is a hiking on this workshop. With that being said, these hikes are mostly on flat ground with little elevation gain. A few locations do allow for you to descend into the canyon via switchbacks if you’d like.

Weather:

During this time of year, we are hoping for some dramatic monsoon stormy skies. With monsoon season for the Grand Canyon taking place from Mid-July to early September, we will hopefully be lucky enough for some storms to come over the canyon. Regardless of storms, we will be out for every sunrise and sunset, and if clouds don’t show up to the party, we will take advantage of the dark skies for night photography. Temperatures will be warm during the day and cool at night.

Transportation:

Each student will be required to provide their own vehicle for this workshop to transport themselves and their luggage in between each location and to / from the airport. Once at a shooting location, I will provide a vehicle for us to all ride in together for each outing. *Any spouses that come along will be required to follow along in their own vehicle due to limited space for participants.

It is recommended to fly into and out of Phoenix Sky Harbor.

When does the workshop start and wrap?

The workshop will begin with our meet and greet at 3PM at our South Rim accommodations and will wrap at 10AM on the North Rim.
